the power/weight ratio is bad as it is, ive tried drifting nitro and its just loud and dirty. plus with all the new tech with brushless motors there is really no need for nitro.

Made them, i used tmaxx tie rod ends for the "q clips" and styrene plastic tubes for the cross bars, styrene half hollow box tubes that look likes trays for the attachments and i used the plastic from the little "bikes" cut out for the fairing. Used my own Yakima setup for inspiration. All the stuff can be found at your local hobby shop like hobby people or hobby town :)

Good question. Can we take this to the next level guys for the n00b's me included. I looked into this a while ago and found little detail close to hand.
Where do you get the bodies and upgrades from?
Like crpwrx said what scale?
I'm in the UK so any European links would be good. I shall start by looking here

But real talk, if you're serious about getting into it the hobby. Differential lock is the most important thing about drifting, if the chassis you are choosing has an adjustable diff then you're set. But if not, look up DIY's on how you can "lock" your diff. It's different with every person though, i myself had a 1 way spool up front, and my rear diff a half turn from full lock. From there it's just a matter of adjusting your suspension to your liking, modifying your perfect replica body shell, and getting used to your car.
From a start i'd get
-The chassis itself: Good ones include, the tamiya tt-01, associated tc4, hpi sprint 2 drift, hpi e10, and all the yokomo chassis. (i've had all these chassis besides the E10, i prefer shaft driven chassis)
-atleast 2 batteries (NiMH with 3000+ Mah 6 or 7 cell dependent on your speed control)
- a speed charger, the integy D1L is good because it can charge up to 10 cells and has adjustable amps. or the Duratrax intellipeak twin charger, because this can charge two packs at once if you're impatient. (ive had both and loved them)
-your favorite body shell, that you'll have fun customizing. use the stock one for your basher
-a good set of rechargable AA batteries, if not regular will do fine.
And parts are available almost everywhere, here in socal theres hobby shops in every city. If not towerhobbies, hobby people, hobby town usa, and ebay are all great places to find what you need.
But i must warn you, as someone else said this hobby can and will be a money pit if you let it. Although most of what you'll buy will hardly depreciate in value it can still quickly rack up. I had to give up the hobby to fun my actual car. But someday i'll be back haha

im gunna get an hpi sprint 2 rtr car prob an imprezza then prob get a s2000 body and maybe some more bodies later , should i get the adj. coilover susp. or just springs?
Rattlecan Hero
07-05-2010, 11:13 AM
You actually dont need any suspension drop items, It's not like a real car where you lower it for the look or anything because you can just lower the body on the body post to "lower it". Suspension characteristic wise, stock HPI sprint 2 comes with a "coilover" type suspension. Theres a threaded body to adjust the dampening, if not you can always put those c clips on to stiffen it up. The thing about rc car's is that in most cases, especially drifting suspension doesn't really matter and it hardly effects the actuall ride of the chassis because the scale is so small you'd hardly be able to tell the difference. That's my opinion atleast, like my drift chassis the only reason i adjusted suspension was when i was adjusting my wheel fitment and solving rubbing issues. I wouldn't worry about suspension setups until you know how to actually control the car and you have a basic understanding of how to make it do what you want it to, from there you can adjust things to your liking. but like i said it won't matter until you can pinpoint what you want changed and know where to adjust things. hope that helps :)

No prob haha, umm well those mesh wheels were custom spec LOL. Basically what i did was cut the wheel in half and flipped the inner barrel part and glued it to the outside, you basically measure how much gap you need to fill in and cut it off the rear part of the rim to provide back spacing. Yeah that body is the HPI 200MM Prova STI
Heres a vid for the wheels.

Lol you can if you want, what it basically is like a type of traction control. it's basically like you're drifting and ken block is sitting next to you and keeps grabbing the wheel and fighting you for the steering wheel half the time. Sure you can do cool drift and what not as a beginner lol. but still like i said its not really you.. its a cheat for beginners. just learn how to drift it on your own, so you can develop your own tips and tricks you know? no assistance, just pure skill. anyways heres a video of the product in action, don't let the commercial fool you though this video was made to get you to buy it.

I would get the E10 personally, i like the shaft driven cars alot better.
On the belt driven cars after you lock the diffs you'll have to replace the belts every so often.
And as far as the nitrotek or whatever, theres two reasons i wouldn't even touch that thing. One nitro is a pain the ass, sure it has a real motor. but it's noisy, it's messy, and requires alot more maintanence. especially for drifting, you'll burn up your motor quickly. The nitro is expensive, and just like a real drift car you'll be spending alot towards the motor. And another thing, i'm not sure how well it's doing over there in the uk. but i've never even heard of nitrotek, if i were you i'd try and stick to the more main stream chassis. Not to be a brand whore, but it's better to go with the well known brands because of the parts support and the regular availability of aftermarket products. brands include, yokomo, tamiya, team associated, traxxas, HPI, Hot bodies, and team losi. In the rc world, the electric motor is incomparable to any other nitro motor and is considered obsulete.
After all the world's fastest rc car, is in fact electric :)

Well this is only for the abs/pvc tires. because the piece of pvc just sits on the wheel. for the real rubber tires or drift compound tires that require the bead to seat the tire. The only way to get flush fitment is to just get wheels with good offset. i think HPI wheels make up to -9 offset. which is decently flush.

Thanks Rattlecan. I have no intentions of touching that Nitrotek shit. The answer I was looking for was the E10 over the Drift 2.
The E10 comes as a complete package here in the UK for not a lot of money
http://www.hpiracing.co.uk/piw.php?partNo=10722
I will no doubt have a shit load of questions nearing the purchase regarding wheels, suspension and bodies
The kit car I have linked are there any upgrades I should consider?
Batteries etc

Hey man, no problem. Just trying to help everyone out haha, feel free to pm me if also!
Actually thats a really good price too, considering its the whole kit.
Right off the bat, i'd invest in a good speed charger. they range from $35-80+ $35 being the most basic. you want something that can plug into the wall while at home, and you you should try and find a charger that can charge up to a 7 cell battery if you decide to get one. NiCd and NiMh capable is a must. I recommend the Integy D1L great charger for the price, it can charge up to 10 cells and you can adjust the amps the batteries charge at. The reason for an aftermarket charger is because the included charger charge time is about 4 or 5 hours. Aftermarket chargers can charge them in about 20-25 minutes.
I would also purchase a couple batteries, anything 7.2v or higher (6 or 7 cell) will be great, make sure its NiMh (Nickel Metal Hydrate) and has atleast 3000+ Milli Amps (MaH)
The reason i say this is because the stock battery is a NiCd (Nickel Cadium) and the way it drains is the voltage drops constantly as you use it so peak power is only seen the first 2 or 3 minutes. The NiMh batteries retain peak power through out the whole charge and at the end it finally dumps. The Milli Amps represent your run time, the stock battery is 1500 MaH, and will give you about 5-10 run times. 3000+Mah will give you 15-20 minute run times! Get a couple, so you can use one and have one charging at the same time.
And if you can afford it, a set of rechargable AA batteries, you'll need 8 for the remote. after a few months they will pretty much pay for themselves.

personally i own the sprint2 and id would opt for something better. its a good chassis but it wont drift out of the box unless your on ice. you will need to replace the tires right away and if your looking to do heavy modifying there isnt much out side of basic hop ups (motor, esc, suspension, etc) anything out side of that needs to be custom. steering is very loose and if you want to get really aggressive drifts you need to do a lot of modifying.
the sprint 2 is an awesome chassis, dont get me wrong. its just i would have rather spending $ on a different chassis. if you want a great chassis and will drift out of box go with a
hot bodies cyclone s drift, its from HPI but the chassis is SO much better, and hop ups galore.
we need to go drifting sometime guys so i have a reason to finish my rc..
edit:
btw i have both chassis so i speak from experience

Do you have the Sprint 2 Sport or the sprint 2 drift? I thought the drift version came setup to drift (tires, suspension, motor position, etc)
the sprint 2 sport RTR and drift RTR are identical aside from small minor differences (motor 15t instead of the 20t, tires, and i think some gearing and spring rates). the tires that comes with the drift are actually gas type drift tires. the sprint 2 stock 15t doesnt have enough torque to drift those tires.
and i have the drift RTR

well if your just looking to drift casually then the sprint 2 is still a great chassis. just some obligated mods are needed. like locked rear diff, abs tires or hard compound tires, ligher weight greased front diff, higher rate shock oil, modified front and rear diff casing. then you will have a perfectly balanced casual drifter you will really enjoy.
but you want to go with something really aggressive fast and countersteers more realisticly then you will need to move on to a different chassis lol

No go on CS modding the Sprint 2?
you can cs mod it but its not worth the trouble. i have rear heavily over driven in the rear just to get it to counter steer but it doesnt follow through and understeers alot. plus you need alot of power and adjustment to dial in the rear suspension. also depends on the surface your driving on.

As a beginner should I learn 50/50 in a car like the sprint and once I have that down upgrade to a better chassis to learn CS?
that will work, but to me once you understand the car you can drive it either way. 50/50 is too easy and to be honest its just boring. i like my set up as loose as possible so i can throw the car around and with out CS or atleast a really torque motor 10t and lower the sprint is very numb and sluggish.
but as a beginner any chassis will do.
if i can do it over know what i know i would have just went straight to the cyclone and CS'd that

i wouldnt get an HPI, unless you are looking at hot bodies which is pretty much HPI. yokomo has some awesome chassis but id go with the more high-end chassis because hopups add up really quick.
also there are a lot of places that sell wheels, i get most of my stuff locally but i also get a lot of stuff off of www.genkidoridori.com, www.towerhobbies.com, www.rcmart.com

That would make the whole thing silver. Since you paint the inside you have to tape off what you want a different color, paint one color, remove the tape then paint the other color.

What is a good brand/model to get for drifting? Particularly one with a good selection of parts that I can change out and customize.
Luckily I already have a good radio and lots of pro status batteries.

There are several good starters. I started with the Tamiya TT-01, also had a TA05 and a TC5. You'll need to try both a shaft and belt driven and see what works for you.
Personally, the TT-01 is old, but countless upgrades, easily available parts, and easy to work on.
By how far, he was probably refering to if you wanted to get a brushless motor and ESC, an FM transmitter and receiver, and actually getting into real fine tuning. I knew what weight my dampner oil was, the gear/pinion ratio of the car, corner weights and everything. Most people open the box, pull the car out, and take it outside. (None of my cars ever saw concrete)

i picked up an hpi sprint 2 flux a few weeks ago, havnt driven one of these since i raced em years back. But i always used hpi cars so i just went with what i knew, and wanted to go brushless. Personnaly I would recommend their rtr kits for anyone looking to get started as they have a good range for pretty much any experience/price level. I had forgotten how much fun they are to tear up aha, i need to get some good pics of the new setup.

It depends on what you want to spend really. A good, easily upgradable and affordable, starting point is the Tamiya TT-01. These are all over ebay for about $100. Best of all, they are several different cars you can choose from.
The wheelbase is the main aspect of buying the shells/bodies from other companies. For the most part, the 1/10th scale drift cars range from 190mm-220mm. Be sure to check the wheelbase of the chassis you purchase before looking for the body you want from another company.
www.towerhobbies.com seems to be the largest distributor of RC car parts that i've ever seen, however searching for what you want may take forever. Honestly, ebay has tons of sellers with stores that stock just about anything you could type in. 90% of my TT-01 parts were purchased on ebay and sent from overseas, mostly Japan.
After I spent 2 years in Japan, I kept in touch with some of the locals and I've got a pretty solid link to most of the RC hobby shops in Okinawa. If theres something you cant find online, ask me, and I can get it.

If you dont have low offset wheels for it, go with the 190mm, but you can use 200mm shells and either get lower offset wheels or larger hex adapters. My TT-01 ran 10mm hex adapters on the Corvette, but required aftermarket dog-bone and swayarms.

There's are a few different websites you can go to. My favorite is http://www.genkidoridori.com/. Just like real wheels, RC wheels have offsets too! To get the wheels cambered, you have to have a chassis that allows for adjustable camber settings like the hpi sprint 2 or hotbodies cyclone.

I raced years and years ago on the weekends... then drifted up until a couple years ago. I am thinking about it.
Is anybody drifting the cup racers? I would like do get that Porsche RSR kit and put some drift tires on it to slide around.... a little chassis like that with a crazy motor could be dope

Just get an e10 or a sprint to drift. They are set up perfectly out of the box.

What do you use to outline the lines with? Just a black pen?

I used a super fine tip sharpie on the outside of the body, and if you mess up a q-tip with some non-acetone nail polish remover takes it right off. Super easy compared to a few other methods I've seen.

Hit the dirt track at rcmadness for the first time last night, tons of fun, 2wd SC is a handful lol. Initially traction was a huge problem, but once the track grooved up that improved significantly. Definitely lot more challenging than the indoor carpet track.
