View Full Version : Buying an EVO

Hey guys you probably have seen my Lexus around and possibly my old wrx. Im in the process of buying a second car and have decided on an EVO VIII.
I am going to be keeping my Lexus because it has a special place in my heart and i have always wanted a back up car.
In MD the winters are harsh and my poor rwd Lexus is too pretty for the salty and dangerous roads.
I was looking into an STI but the deal fell through and now i found an evo for the same price and in great condition.
Im pretty excited to get back in a fast car because ever since going from my old WRX to my IS250 i have been missing the feeling.
I can tell you all right now the first thing going on the EVO WILL be a set of coilovers, follow by possibly some Rota Grids. Dont flame on me because i want rotas, ive had them and like them. I have real wheels on my Lexus and i know since my EVO will be getting driven more i wouldnt want to put expensive wheels on it. I dont plan on touching the motor. I just want to keep it clean and simple.
My plan is drop, wheels, front lip.and possibly a rool bar. because they look sweet lol.
Couldnt fiund a good forum for EVOs so i figured id post on here. Plus i would probably get alot of hate from the real evo tuners.
Any suggestions/ comments welcome.

that's a do luck front lip, just paint it black, it'll look much better, also, cut the "beak" out of the front grill, add some CF bumper ducts, and you're set. Looks pretty clean. also, check out evolutionm.net... lots of stuff there for evo owners

Congrats man. I also have an Evo. Going on 5 years now. Im located in Baltimore, MD so im sure ill see you around. I saw that Evo posted on dcevoclub.com. Is that where you got it? I tried to get him to part out those tail lights but he wouldn't budge. The best evo forum is evolutionm.net. There is A LOT of good useful information on there. I have learned so much from that forum. There are a lot of good tuners on there ( David Buschur, STM, CBRD, etc ). Even though there are a lot of haters on there of the fitment scene. Welcome to the Evo community.
I also just ordered TODAY some 18x9.5 Grids in titanium chrome for my evo. Cant wait to get them in.

in retrospect i would have bought an evo over an sti and i drive an 05. your lexus is straight boss. if i were you i would keep that lip on i like it a lot. i just couldnt find an evo after months of searching that didnt look like it hadnt been beat to shit ever with under 30k
the only thing you need to make sure that is in good shape is transmission clutch which should be apparent via a test drive. also inspect the motor to make sure it hasnt been poorly parted out. evo engine bays are much easier to tell for foul play than an STi

its actually a Varis lip. most likely a replica. good addition bro and its really clean. check out the link. lots of knowledgable info and bullsh*t info. LOL

thanks for all the input guys. I will be the third owner but so far what i can tell is that it has barely been modded. The lip is a replica and i think it sticks out way too much. I think i will try to trade it for another style.

03-24-2011, 12:37 AM
probably go ask on evolutionm.net. im sure they're more familiar with the coilovers for your evo. worst case you can probably go with some teins and just remove the helper springs. those should go way lower than what you need.

Apexi N1's are perfect on the Evo and they ride really good. They are the best of the cheap coilovers before you go to better stuff like KW v3s or Ohlins.

I don't think most EVO coilovers typically have any issues going real low. I would personally check into Fortune Auto for the money.

This isn't exactly true. N1's are made in the same factories as Ksports and Megans. Which is fine, but I don't consider that the best of the cheap stuff. I run Megans BTW, and they are quite good for being dirt cheap.
I feel like BC, Fortune Auto, and other brands that offer a larger diameter damper piston would be better for your money.

i wouldn't go with fortune coils because one of my evo buddy already blew out on of his coils within 15k miles. DD and minimal track use on it. I would go with BC or K-Sport with a higher spring rate.

I have Stance coils, they work for me.....and don't let anyone tell you a rim cant fit. I am currently at 18x9.5+2 in front and +7 rear, with -4 all around(evom has lots of haters). did the math and you can go up to a 18x11+16 with 245's and that will fit too:twisted:

nice. i would get an evo if they came stock with a dual stage pant.
stpkenton
03-24-2011, 09:25 PM
the front has adjustment. i could go to about -6 i think in the front, with the stock plus the camber plates.....as for the rear, about -3.9 to 4 is the limit. this is with the stock bolt. if you get adjustable rear lower control arms you can go farther. just so you know i am almost max stiff, if you get a higher spring rate than the lowest one(i forget what i have) you will probably be better off. i miss printed though i have stance gr+

DUDE! I loved your IS250, i was so sad when you sold it. is was one of the nicest ones in its time. im going to try and keep my Lexus and still play with it from time to time. On nice days like today was i drive the Lexus. its a great feeling. i absolutely love your evo too. whats even funnier is that we got the same year and color, only yours is an mr. you wasted no time in modding your new evo and you have def set the bar, for me at least. and i hate you for getting white wheels cuz i was thinking the same color combo. i guess we have too much in common lol.

ebay. its the seibon cf do luck style. i mean i do drive the evo like every day now so i have grown pretty attached. i still drive the lexus on occasion like today because it was like 85 degrees which is a rare occurrence over here.
i have no idea what wheels i want for now but i know that before i even think about wheels im going to need to get some better suspension. my aftermarket spring have ruined my stock shocks and i think its time for coilovers!!!! this might take a while.

Dude... i have 235/40/18 on my 9.5" wide wheels.... you should be fine. I had my rear fenders rolled and i rub on big bumps in the front. (i need an alignment and i need to take my fender liners out and i should be good).
