Yes, that's my blower! :bananapowerslide: Stage I intercooled supercharger to make my slow car not as slow. Too bad my lowness will prove to be a challenge in actually experiencing the added power. I will be changing it's oil then taking it down to get painted before I install it.

Has anyone else gone from N/A (Naturally Aspirated) to F/I (Forced Induction)? If so, let's see it!

is aqua cooled similar to aftercool

Shadow Blue
06-26-2011, 10:11 PM
Aqua-cooled is referencing the internal heat exchanger inside the radiator within the manifold. This is a closed cooling system which utilizes a water to air intercooler (Stage I)...the combustion elements never mix with the cooling elements as you would commonly see with meth injection that cools from inside the actual runners and is mixed with the air and fuel in most cases. Although, the supercharger can be ran as a stand-alone unit without a cooling system which would make it a Stage 0.

Hopefully this answers your question...

I can tell you that I have a big bore 70mm tri-fold throttle body on order which should give me 1.5psi more and increases the whine ;) The S/C will be finished and installed within the next 7 days if things go according to plan...so stay tuned!

No one really knows about the project...or any of my projects for that matter. It would be useless to reveal it there because, unfortunately, most of the members don't appreciate legit work. I would attribute this to the average age and/or knowledge of the intermediate member there...they don't even know what they're looking at most of the time. I am covering it in the Moderator's section, though, since they definitely have a lot of F/I knowledge and are giving me pointers along the way.

I know the guys here aren't responding much, but I know they're at least watching by the amount of views it's getting...so I know they're appreciating the hard work that's going into this.

Don't get me wrong...I love our site but the lack of knowledge by the majority is why we get such backlash from other communities.

By all of your support, positive thoughts, consideration and prayers...THE CAR WAS RECOVERED!!!:bananapowerslide:

I received a call from the cops this morning between 1 - 1:30am. It was parked in a reserved parking space at an apartment complex with the window down, so the owner of the parking space called the police when they saw the condition of the interior. I was told that it was in drivable condition and to pick it up ASAP. I headed over to find my deck missing and amp stolen with the alarm destroyed and the shifter lock gone. The paint on the driver side roof and door is scuffed and scraped. Guess what was there, though!?!? All my motor parts WITH the S/C were in the trunk!!!! Thank God!! The S/C is worth more than the car (not by total investment but rather sale value).

Here's where things get odd...I found all sorts of documents including a pay stub, insurance info, Aflac document, an application and vehicle registration all in the same person's name (a woman). My jacket also smelled of a woman. All of these papers were found in the glove box and in the seat...as if the person thought they could simply have my car. There were also tools in the back seat, broken knife blade in the glove compartment (I'm assuming for coke) and a woman's shoe box in the back seat as well. The motor was still warm when I arrived as if they were using it for transportation. The cop stated that he dusted for fingerprints and couldn't really come up with anything yet, when I got home, there were complete hand prints on the car and all over the windows. After my phone charges, I'll take pics..that's how clear these fingerprints were as my car was clean when it was stolen.

Again, I love you all!!! I can't thank you enough!! Let the project continue!!!

If the theft hadn't occurred and I was on schedule, the S/C would almost be completely installed. I was awaiting my finishing touches, which actually arrived today. So I had bit of a scare...2 of my custom inserts don't fit:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-07-21225022.jpg

They are CNC'd to spec, so we began thinking either the valve covers are from a 2.5 liter Sonata (BOOooooo) or the entire engine was swapped at some point before I owned it. Why is that bad? The V6 is a 2.7 liter with 30 more HP than the 2.5 Sonata...what a downgrade. After a thread regarding the issue, including a bunch of measurements and info from other members (the past few days), we figured out that the custom pieces were CNC'd incorrectly...how the hell does that happen!?!? We will get final measurements tonight and have them redone. What a scare!

Anyway, a few other goodies have been ordered that you all should like...I'm excited! If you guys are getting bored, here's some quick wheel porn to hold you over:

I decided to pull the coolant crossover as it is a very important component which houses inexpensive yet potentially devastating parts if they malfunction...especially on an 8 year old car:

Proper cooling of the engine is crucial when going F/I...wouldn't you agree? So lets swap them all out!!! Hoses, temperature sensor, thermostat...etc.!!!! Fuck it!!!!!!

I've always had a love for roots blowers.....

So have I :D

Stage IV Lower Intake Manifold arrived today:

This is a CNC'ed (5-axis) port & polish process which removes the most material without going through the casting. The difference in the port volume can even be seen by eye as it is an extensive difference over stock. This allows the blower to move much more volume per revolution resulting in more power. Also, since each runner is CNC'ed, they are equal.

Compared:

Thank God for Rockauto. I purchased $204 worth of premium parts (to support the build)...the Stealership wanted over $400 for the same but OEM parts. I had to buy fuel filter parts from the Stealership, though, since they are Stealership-only products. I still have more to buy...man, this is getting expensive!

The completion deadline is 9/4...Import Face-Off. Considering everything that has happened, I will be so happy if I make it :)

I sanded a couple of my fingernails down completely because of all the odd angles. Most of the supercharger body is complete, as you can see. I'm off tomorrow and will finish sanding everything...

In order to run boost safely, it's important to solidify the surrounding components. Parts are beginning to arrive:

-Cabin air filter :)
-E-Z oil drain valve (I love these...highly recommended...ever change oil without getting oil on your hands?)
-Oil drain plug gasket
-Temperature sender
-Purge Control Valve
-Supercharger coupler

On another note, check out my CF overlay that arrived with custom stainless steel rings:

Thanks, buddy. I'm documenting it because it's truly hard work. I've researched so many things including price matching, calling, etc. I'm not a mechanic...I'm not rich (I work 2 jobs 72hrs/wk)...and I do all my own work. For example, I spent 2 hours sanding those fuel rails...

^Thanks and yes it does feel good :)

Not only do I want those of you who don't know what going forced induction is all about, but also for everyone to see how difficult it is to complete a legitimate build...one that's reliable and will last. Because I'm not a mechanic, I wish someone would've made a thread like this for me to follow or even have an idea of what to expect. It's hard enough as it is with this particular car along with the lack of aftermarket support.

Parts still coming in:

-Front/Rear valve cover gaskets
-Spark plug tube seals
-Fuel filter assembly
-Fuel pump suction filter
-Fuel tank air filter assembly
-Thermostat

The mighty Big Bertha finally decided to show up today...70mm Billet Tri-Flow Big Bore Throttle Body. With a stock throttle body in an F/I application, the blower is not happy when you have a vacuum between the throttle body and the blower inlet. The result of this is bottlenecking. The Tri-Flow is good for 1-1.5 lbs of boost alone (1psi = 10hp), so what does that tell you? It means the rotor packs are picking up more volume of air and moving it through the engine; more volume with fuel and spark creates more power. The big bore throttle body will also yield better throttle response. Here she is!!!

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-08-15164048.jpg

Difference between inlets:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-08-15223216.jpg

Difference between mating points:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-08-15222956.jpg

OEM throttle body flapper valve over big bore throttle body...WHAT A DIFFERENCE!!!

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-08-15223733.jpg

^This teamed with the S/C upper intake manifold and Stage IV lower intake manifold, my engine will experience ZERO bottlenecking.

Anytime you run boost or a high compression engine, you want to use colder spark plugs than stock. What you have is, basically, a piece of metal sitting in your cylinder that is searingly hot. The correct amount of Heat + Fuel + Pressure = Combustion. Now...if the plug is too hot it will ignite the fuel prematurely and cause that ever so nasty situation called "Detonation"...not good Haha! There is an adverse effect, though...colder spark plugs will deteriorate faster which means it is necessary to replace them more often. Also, since these aren't for stock application, they have to be gapped manually.

1 step colder spark plugs w/gap tool:

Haha! Thanks :) I wouldn't exactly say "cruising." I've hit a couple speed bumps that I've managed to get around. It's not running just yet...during install I noticed that my lower intake manifold was missing the 2 corner studs. I'm also missing my IAC gasket...both of which are on order. I read this and had a nice laugh because that's such a nice thing for you to say and for me to hear...it's very humbling :) I've put so much hard work into this project which I don't think anyone really understands. You may have missed it above but I wanted everyone to know that I've never done this before...I'm learning every step of the way and I'm not a mechanic by any means. Yes, I've done tons of research and planning because I wanted to be sure it's done right the FIRST time...especially because I'm not a mechanic and not completely comfortable with such intricate work as this.

I'm off tomorrow (today since it's 12:25 Pacific) and I should be complete! I'll post video too! Wish me the best!

Thanks, guys! Epic!?!? I really appreciate that, buddy :)

Well, I ran into yet another wall which will, ultimately, delay my completion. My IAC (Idle Air Control Valve), located on the throttle body (TB), hits a case on the firewall. The supercharger sits diagonally, as does the plenum, which pushes the bottom of the TB up and the IAC toward the firewall when the aftermarket TB is attached. The stock TB is designed differently by having the IAC mount diagonally which moves the IAC away from the firewall...here are some illustrations:

As you can see here, the SC plenum is tilted diagonally. The red circle shows where the IAC is hitting:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/TB2.jpg

Close-up:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-09-17122035.jpg

70mm Tri-Flow Big Bore Throttle Body (Left) and Stock TB (Right):

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-09-17130056.jpg

The IAC is mounted to the bottom of the 70mm TB. As you can see, the mounting point is parallel to the TB where as the stock TB (right) has a mounting point that would sit the IAC diagonally and away from the firewall:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/TB1.jpg

Stock Alpine SC Plenum:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/TB3.jpg

So what we figured is that NGM's 70mm SC plenum should turn the TB enough to give clearance for the IAC. Here is the aftermarket NGM plenum from their SC setup (interchangeable):

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/TB4.jpg

So, install will be on hold until it arrives :( I appreciate everyone's support through this!

You're definitely right in the fact that you must always be prepared for set-backs and allow the proper amount of time in your schedule to compensate it. I'm interested to see your Civic build...keep it clean!

I called Next Generation Motorsports (NGM) yesterday and it may be an issue getting this part. He recently fired his CNC guy and has been building the maps himself but has yet to program for the S/C plenum. He has a few left but wants to hold them for the complete S/C kits just in case. NGM said they'll call me back today to let me know whether or not they can provide the part...so keep your fingers crossed. I have a backup plan, though...a guy in Canada is selling one off his S/C kit so I'll pick it up if plans fall through with NGM. If NGM can provide the part, it'll be here in about 3 days.

Since the S/C is a Stage 0 at the moment, no tuning is required since boost levels will be low. The Alpine Supercharger normally runs between 3 - 4 psi but, with my add-ons, I'll be running 5 - 6 psi. I'm simply adding air for power and have not gotten into fuel. NGM sells a mapped ECU for a Stage 0 with I/H/E but isn't worth the money at this time since I'll soon be bumping up to Stage II. A Stage I will be adding the intercooler (heat exchanger) which is a fully enclosed water to air system. A Stage II would be to purchase the smaller supercharger pulley, bigger fuel injectors (or 7th injector) and piggy back fuel tuner and/or NGM's Stage II ECU upgrade which has been pre-tuned for maximum output.

Hopefully ^that gives you an idea of "how it works." :)

I think that you crossing your fingers did the trick! NGM was nice enough to sacrifice 1 S/C plenum for the cause! The order has been placed and it should be here in a few days.

So we'll see if this fixes the issue and, if not, I may put some heat to the plastic cover and bend/mold it out of the way [a little] since we're talking an 1/8 of an inch to fit and a tad more for engine movement. It's a good thing I'm running front/rear solid motor mounts.

Sorry for the premature bump, everyone. I'm just a little excited that these came in and this IS WFC, right?:

These are KJB Rear Racing Control Arms which are machined from Aircraft quality 6061 T-6 Aluminum. The benefit of using our Rear Racing Control Arms is that they will not flex like the stock control arms causing the suspension to stiffen and improve the handling of the car. The rod ends are top quality Chromoly steel with a Nylon liner to prevent dirt from entering the joint. With an Ultimate Radial Load of over 19,000 lbs each, these racing control arms are over-engineered and super strong. They allow camber adjustment +/- 3 degrees.

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Wheel%20Project/2011-09-19225100.jpg

Again, ^these are another rare item...they're super expensive and the company recently went out of business, so they're not even available. I was lucky to find them brand new :) Anyway, I maxed out my camber bolts because the collars of my coilovers were grinding the tires off. With the Rear Race Control Arms, this will not be an issue since the entire strut position is adjusted rather than the joint at the bottom of the strut. Opiniions....Should I powder coat them gold, leave them as they are or do partial powder coating?

Rockin sir!! Fingers crossed.

Thanks as always!

I figured out a clean and OEM style of relocating the air sensor. People usually cut a hole in the intake pipe and gob it up with silicone. I dremeled out an oversized hole and used a gasket to seal the sensor. It is actually so tight that I have to screw the sensor into place. You'll notice that the hole is not centered...I wanted the sensor aimed up and away from the firewall:

http://i321.photobucket.com/albums/nn392/Goldnshadow/Alpine%20Stage%20I/2011-10-02180937.jpg

Unfortunately, I was forced to use my last resort, which was to cut the box open on the firewall. The good part is that the wires are covered by a boot so there won't be worries of anything shorting. After cutting the box open, everything fit perfectly:

I removed the stock Alpine S/C plenum and wanted to show some comparisons with it attached to the TB. You can see how much smaller the diameter is and how my air flow would have been restricted or "bottle necked":

Thank you, sir :) No paint...I like it clean too, although, this motor will bring about pure nastiness and I want it to flow to the exterior...

I definitely will. Sit tight, I'm just about finished.

This is a great comment and I really appreciate it :)

Well, I have good news, bad news and more good news. Good news is I completed the install! The bad news is the fuel block for the pressure gauge was leaking pretty heavily. I figured out that the bolt holes are stripped which were preventing me from fully tightening the unit...so I'm stuck for now until I can tap the holes out :( More good news...I figured that, since I couldn't start the car, I would install the hood! I love it! I can't get it to shut yet since it's sitting on top of the supercharger. I'll have to cut holes out of the underside later. Here's a glimpse:

Sorry to keep you all waiting...

The car has been garaged since July and I just got it started yesterday! After tons of troubleshooting, it came down to faulty wiring on my kill switch. Now that it's running, I took a quick vid for you all:

That was some crazy sound you got there. How much it produced power?
Nice car btw ;)

Edit. Just an idea, but how would your car look if you changed that lip under your bumber to carbon.. perhaps those side skirts too. I think those could look better whit that new carbon bonnet..?

Thanks, buddy.

All the info is actually in the comments section of the vid.

I thought about the carbon fiber idea on the splitter kit but it wouldn't look good. It would, more or less, disappear being that it would be black...

You're exactly right. It was very hard work and extremely time consuming but well worth the trouble. Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks, buddy. The V6 is a lot more stout than the I4, so the TQ numbers maintain a close relationship with the HP numbers. I suspect that, when I upgrade to Stage II, my TQ reading will be higher than HP.

I love the difference in power, which is immediately available...I love the whine of the supercharger and the sound of SOOooo much air being sucked in through all of the increased diameter plumbing...it's incredible. What scares me is this is only the tip of the iceburg :)

How am I going to stop? Willwood Big Brake Kit with 13" drilled rotors (heat and water dissipation) and 4-piston calipers. The stock setup is an 11" plain rotor with single piston calipers...I'm sure I'll see a big difference:

I paid him about 8 months ago for some stainless bolts. Never got them, got sick of waiting, and went to a local fastenal and got my own. I didn't even bother reminding him it was only $30.

I was just doing some Google searching, looking for forums for business purposes and stumbled into here. I saw your thread, my name was mentioned so I figured I'd say hello. Yeah, I'm still wanting to get some 460cc injectors from him, and a reflash programmer to convert my stage 2 ecu to a stage 3. We shall see how it pans out.

I would have to confirm your ecu is a 4 bit, not a 2 bit, otherwise I would do that. I could sell you my 290cc injectors as well.

It's been a while since I updated but I've been working on a lot of "non-power" related things. There IS something directy correlated, though:

What better way to increase power through efficiency than cutting fat!?!?
