Thread: Fc rx7

    Default Fc rx7

Well, I have been looking for a driftable car for quite some time now. And the other day after leaving school I see a FC Rx7 parked forsale, I stopped and got the number, and immediately called the guy, talked him down to $1300 over the phone. And then stroll over to the bank to get some cash out.

Drive the car, interior looks like someone tried stripping it out with a hammer, but not a theft like tear down, just a complete interior redo or something, runs well, drives decent, but needs shocks, and rattles like a tin can..

Basically I'm a high school student with a part time job. Trying to save for college, and all that good jazz.

I guess im looking for some things to look for in this car that would make me run away, as I don't want to loose my money. I know the guy has only had it for about a month, and bought it pretty cheap, I know he lied to me about what he paid. I know his son is in jail, and he doesn't seem like much of a better person. I guess, what are a few things I need to look for?

THanks in advance, and I apologize for making such a nEwb post

i asked my roommate who is an accomplished rotary builder.....he said aside from all of the normal things you look at when buying a used car try and find someone local that can run a compression test to find out if the apex seals are still good. normal range is about 100-115 and if its insane low then you have a bad seal. you can use a normal compression testing tool but there is a special tool that gives a more accurate reading, that is something you might need to do some research on in a rotary forum. he recommended rx7club.com and ask the guy if he pre mixed oil. if you cant find anyone that is willing to help you with some more knowledge on it pm me and i'll put you in contact with him

I drove it, seen it, and like it. I just haven't dove deep into the Rotary game, so I'm pretty much on an Island when it comes to knowing what to look for. If it was a Nissan I'd be set in gold, but its not. haha

i highly doubt auto zone will be able to do a compression test, and hell half the people that work at the ones i have been to wouldn't even know what a rotary is. that's defiantly something that requires someone who knows what they are doing, or at least how to remove a spark plug

haha shit. I live in somewhat small town Nebraska. Chances are most the shops haven't worked on, or even seen rotaries before. So, I'm pretty much fucked if the Apex seals are not so grand?

Taking care of a rotary engine takes knowledge and daily maintenance (money). Its hard to say its a good financial choice.

^ yea I have to agree, even if it is N/A rotary's are a pain. don't get me wrong they are a beautiful thing when they are running but the are financial black holes. I'm not sure what you mechanical experience is, but they are something that you need to be prepared to work on and drop money into a lot.

I'm not really looking for a black hole. But I think I would eventually look for an engine swap of some sort.

I had looked and looked for an FC and then decided not to go for it as a daily driver/drifter. Rotaries are high maintenance and need lots of love an attention lol. I actually ended up going the S13 route and never had a major issue in 3 years of DD'ing and sliding around once in a while.

Have you considered any other options? Toyota cressida's are legit, of course S13 or S14, corolla. Maybe these are hard to find in Nebraska, but you could probably find one somewhere nearby.

Insane low being about 20% lower the optimal. I wouldn't even touch a rotary unless it had low miles and regular service records. Such high maintenance cars.
