    Default DBL_TKE's other project

So I haven't been on here much lately since I blew the engine in my GTI. I'm still slowly building the engine but I wanted another car. I decided to get a 3rd gen Camaro. This is my second one now. I previously had an '85 z28 but I parted that out. I finally settled on a black '91 Camaro Z28. I know, there's going to be a lot of haters but these are some of my favorite cars for some reason. I'm just going to copy and paste everything from my thread on another forum.

I picked this thing up in August. It's a 1991 Camaro Z28 hardtop with an LB9 and WCT5 with 131k miles.

    has factory dual cats
had G92 option but now has richmond 3.73's
Posi rear dif but it seems a little worn
    Repainted
    20% tint (approximately)
    Corvette Y2K wheels 17x8.5 and 18x9.5 with Falken FK452's 245/45/17 and 275/40/18
Edelbrock Aluminum high flow water pump
    160* thermostat
    Hurst short throw shifter
    Cat back exhaust (unknown)
    PBR rear disc brakes
    New Accel 19 lb/hr injectors
Sub box for rear cargo well for 2 10" subs

There's not a squeak or rattle in the car and the doors even close perfectly :-D overall the cars in really nice shape. There's a few things that I can nitpick and most issues will be resolved soon. The suspension is fairly shot, I'll be replacing it all with the Ground Control/KYB setup I had in my '85. Steering is a little sloppy, but I will be replacing the steering box and center link with the ones from my '85 as well and will get a bump steer kit. There's no stereo in it but I have a mostly a whole system that I got from Al awhile back that I'll install. The drivers seat a a small tear on the side bolster so I'm going to look around for some Recaro LS's and try to source the adapter brackets. Also the paint has too much orange peel for me to like it. I'm going to see if I can get someone to do a complete wet sand/clay bar/polish/wax.

Overall this is exactly the third gen I've wanted for years. The '91/'92 Z28's are by far my favorite and I love them in black

And a couple to show the tint level

So like Everone else here, I have a problem driving a car with 4x4 status. So I decided to raid the '85 for some parts...

So I ended up with this stuff...

I was making good time so I decided to rip some crap off the '91 as well...

It a two step process to get the car back down...

    Ahh, much better 8)

So I picked up a pair of 10" Kicker Comp VR's (2ohm, dual voice coils). I'll be wiring them up soon.

I also have a few other goodies that are patiently waiting for me.

    Stay tuned...

I purchased this exhaust over a year ago and finally got around to installing it on my car. It is a 3" stainless steel cat back exhaust system designed for a 4th gen F-body. It uses a bullet style muffler positioned before the rear axle, then splits off into two tail pipes after the over-axle bend.

I forgot to take more pictures but in order to install this on a 3rd gen you have to swap the hangers from left to right. The intermediate pipe going to the muffler is too short to reach the y-pipe so when I cut off my old exhaust I left about 8-10" on it past the y-pipe connection. Now this is on a factory dual cat car so that means those with a single cat would also need the 45* bend to reach the cat.

I measured all the pipes to see what it's true diameter is:

2.75" ID at the pipe that connects to the Y-pipe
    3" muffler
    3" over the axle
    2.75" tail pipes
    3.5" tips

I have a few things to note. I'm not that impressed with the quality of the stainless steel. Seems to be a pretty low grade especially compares to the muffler, or even to that of Magnaflow. There is a mix of band clamps and regular exhaust clamps. I don't like how poorly D-shaped exhaust clamps seal. IMO they should all be band clamps.

Overall I'm very satisfied though. I was surprised at the sound. Everyone kept telling me how raspy and loud these exhausts are but in fact it isn't. It has a very deep bassy tone at idle, and really wakes up with a deep aggressive tone at WOT. keep in mind that I'm still running the factory manifolds, Y-pipe and cats. It's very quiet inside the cabin driving around town with the windows up. I'll post a sound clip soon.

Yeah, I love them too but the prime examples are few and far between. I'm building this as an all around performer. Right now it's my daily driver until I finish rebuilding the GTI, then it'll be a weekend car that I'll use to compete in autocross and do a few shows with. And I do plan to lower some more and try to get a a somewhat aggressive wheel fitment. I just need to figure out what kind of wheels to get.

I managed to lower it another .25" up front and almost 1" in the rear. I'm going to need to get shorter springs to go any lower.

Well I ended up lowering the car a little bit more, about a hair less than .5" up front and nearly 1" in the rear. New front fender height is 24.25" with 3" of clearance to the front K-member and I can still make it over speed bumps. I finally feel like the stance is perfect. Now I just need to get some larger spacers on their to bring to wheels out flush with the fenders or find some new wheels. I also need to get some better struts and shocks very soon. I've been looking for deals on Koni sports without much success.
I only snapped one quick dirty picture of the new ride height.

I also finally found a nice set of Recaro LS's. I got them from a local guy on VWvortex. I got a pretty dang good deal on them IMO. I'm currently trying to figure out how I'm going to adapt the factory seat rail to them in a manner that is both safe and looks somewhat professional.

I think this is goon to be a pretty good ride height. It doesn't need to be as low as my GTI. Now I have to play the spacer game to get the wheels to sit flush. I also have to try and find a solution to prevent my a-arms from bottoming out on the k-member and the axle tube from bottoming out on the inner fender. And that's happening without bumpstops, I've got about .5"-1" of clearance. At the same time I have to prevent the dampers from bottoming out, in other words I need more strut/shock travel. Currently I'm trying to find a shorter strut/shock solution but I'm not coming up with many options. The Koni 8610/8611 seem like a possibly option up front, but iver never dealt with inserts before. For the rear i might use Koni 30 series shocks, but ill have to figure out how to mount them, they come with a rod end for both upper and lower mounting points but thr upper stock upper mount just goes the the floorboard with a nut/washer threaded onto the shock shaft. I'm finding that it's a lot more difficult to slam a 3rd gen F-Body than my GTI was.

I've done a few things in the past couple months.

I finally made some adapter brackets and got the Recaro's in there.

Also finally ordered up a hub and got my MOMO wheel installed.

I had some custom headers built for me by a guy named Dyno Don down in SoCal. 1.75" primaries, 2.5" collectors.

Then I fabbed up the rest of my exhaust. 2.5" to single 3". I ended up being able to tuck up the exhaust to have better than stock clearance.

Finally scored a good deal on some Adjustable Koni Sport shocks & struts. (nobody makes a decent coilover for these cars).

I also added a homemade front lip. I like it more than I thought it would so I think it's going to stay.

I also had a guy custom make a carbon fiber front grill. I really like this piece. I was pretty excited to get this on there.

And on Saturday I won "Best Domestic" at the Rose Fest car show at PIR.

Congrats on the trophy dude! I like this car's progression a lot more than I thought I would.
That lip looks great for being home made.

I have several sets of wheels laying around so I did a bunch of test fitting so I can get an idea of what offsets I should be looking at. Nobody has really ever slammed these cars, or run aggressive offsets or even stretched tires. So I don't really have a good idea of what I should be shooting for. I think that I need to stick with around a 25.5-26" tall tire though because the wheel wells are so big that a short tire just looks rediculous.

Heres a 17x9 -1 front and a 17x11 +14 rear front fitment looks pretty good, could come out a little more, but the rear has too much poke.

These are my autocross wheels. 17x9 -1 again front and rear. But they have 285/40/17 tires on them. But I like where the top of the tire sits.

Just for shits N' giggles I threw on the wheels from my GTI. 16x8.5 -19 with a 205/40/16 tire. While they are entirely too small (23") I really like the fitment.

And here's a set of 16x8 -35 with 245/50/16 tires. Where the tread falls is a little too far out. I don't want to pull the fenders.

So now that I have this carbon fiber grill and these smoked turn signals, it makes my stock fog lights look old and dated. So I found some fogs that I liked better. Pilot PL-1058M. I think they'll look alot better as they are a little sleeker. I'm in the middle of the install right now.

Finished installing the fogs, I'll get pictures up soon. They look much better than the stockers. I also order some 1" extended ball joints from Summit Racing, 1" raised caster/camber plates and rear lower control arm relocation brackets from Founders Performance.
